Shadespire

Post by Fassbinder75 »

So, who’s played Shadespire? And what were your thoughts? I’ve only played one game with the base box and the pre-constructed decks, and I thought that it had a lot going for it, and that I really needed to play it some more. The millieu isn’t a big draw for me but I thought the two factions’ thematic base was nicely integrated mechanically. The Liberators are tough, defensive, group based fighters, the Bloodreavers are fast pack hunters who get even more bloodthirsty as the game wears on.

It seems like a game designed with tournament play in mind. FFG’s offerings (X-wing notably) is a turn-off for me because it doesn’t cater to the hobbyist whereas all GW products do. Both of these are plusses in my book.

I have a few games of Shadespire using 4 different factions that are currently available. All the factions had their own play style, which is good. My main problem with the game is that you need to purchase each faction if you want to be competitive in any competition. This is not required if you are playing friendly games but card select then becomes important.

Once you have played a few games the battles become very repetitive with little ability to alter the play style of the faction. The game starts to drag into deck bulid rather then a miniature game supported by cards.

$80 for the base + $45 x 4 for the four additional warbands. That's about a $260 buy in, which isn't too bad for a 'competitive' game. You'd struggle to put a single standard MTG deck for that. I can't speak for longevity as you say though. The card play sitting/deck construction sitting right alongside the minis is a feature to me.

I played it with a friend a few times and really enjoyed it. I'd like to play some more to start fleshing out the different play styles of the factions and the changing objectives.

I played a friends copy thinking it was something I might want to get into but wasnt blown away by the actual game play and mechanics. That's more a personal taste I think. I can see the attraction from a well put together quick skirmish type game

I've got the base set but never played it.

I'd be keen for some games sometime.

Have played a single game with the starter decks against my son, and was quite impressed. In the last turn I, as the Stormcast, was neck and neck on points with the Reavers, despite killing them left, right and centre, and taking only a single CAS myself. My last action was a charge, which successfully dispatched the fourth Reaver from off the board, and got me what I thought was the winning glory point. At which point my boy grins, flips over "Khorne cares not", reaps a further 2 glory, and gets the win. We both laughed.

Most likely a fluke ending, but I was impressed nonetheless. Would definitely be keen to dig in further, once I get some models painted up.

This guy is very good at making how-to-paint-x videos. Not that I'm suggesting you're in need of instruction...

Thought I'd bump this to see if anyone had additional thoughts on the game/ game system since a few more warbands have come out?

Have you played more games? Tried new warbands? Has the card development been well done or is it a GWS Special? :P

Cheers

There was organised play at GG in Melbourne yesterday for Shadespire. I did notice that the two newest squads were well represented - I don't know if that's due to SHINY or power creep. They looked to be having a good time, which is good.

One of the best Netrunner (R.I.P.) players in Aus has been playing a lot of it, which is heartening. I think the consensus is that it is pretty well done in terms of balance. For full competitive play I think you need to buy many/all the faction boxes to give you most deck building options. For a competitive game I don't think it is very expensive compared to its peers, but you will find complainers everywhere on the internet (duh).

It can be played with just the starter set, but for the best decks you'll find that you need at least one card from each expansion. A couple of the races aren't very popular (skaven and undead and the 5 man khorne), most people go for either of the Stormcast warbands.

It's good fun, you rarely get the 'double skulls ruins the game' moment. You play best of 3 rounds, even when you get hammered you can just blame the draw of your cards

The Undead are appealing to me. The expansion packs giving you 3-5 minis and a deck of cards for $45 (ish) seems like pretty good value. I think the new (Magore?) Khorne squad is very killy. The one game I've played out of the box gave me the indication that Garrek's Reavers were better suited to going for objectives.

skeles = 7 miniatures
skaven = 5
orc, khorne, dwarves = 4

it's gone through some changes, they had to rework the only 'set' of items as there was a clear stormcast deck that was winning all the tournaments. there's been a few tournaments throughout the year, and there'll be another 'season' of it with more expansions

it is good fun though

With Nightvaults on the Pre-Order, how are people's thoughts on the game play from the whole season 1? Same, better, worse? Has it been a game that got played a lot and then died off in your play circles? And is that due to gamer ADHD or does the game get a bit 'samey' as the deck builds start to converge on the 'best'?

I'm reading mostly positive stuff. There are some on the Shadespire FB that are a bit over bearing regarding certain poor or good builds, but on the whole it seems to work as a game?

I love the old Specialist games and will retain my collections for such. But having a nice compact 'Board' game with some nice minis that has full play time around 1 hr for 2-3 match play games seems appealing all of a sudden.

my only issue going forward is my same issue with hearthstone, it's all fun and games until you come across someone who's perfected their build and knows everything inside out and you lose horribly and you realise that you cant play BB necromunda kill team and shadespire at a decent level at the same time. theres too many builds to know

Thanks for the feedback Squirrel. :) . Of the games listed which are you cutting back on? Or keeping them all and just going casual/ occasional on some?

Anyone else?

I’ve yet to play a game of necromunda and kill team but about to join seasons/campaigns of both.

I like playing stormcast in shadespire and it bugs me the amount of mirror matches. And in those mirror matches where my 4 wound attack in turn 1 doesn’t work and then their 4 wound attack does and severins dead and I wanna go home

I really enjoyed shadespire all up, to the point that my number one objection is fluff - it really bugs me that they’ve inserted space marines into the fantasy setting. (Stormcast)

I like the speed of the game, the interaction between cards, hexes and minis, and despite some super strong neutral cards the game still maintains a few different ways to build a deck. Super defensive long board setups can be problematic but aren’t unbeatable... it’s easily my favourite game at the moment. I just wish my local group would play it more.

Necromunda has beaten out Shadespire and Kill Team for me at the moment. I think skirmish games are best played in a semi-narrative way and I'm doing by best not to min-max. Our group is having a lot of fun with it.

I'm really interested in how Nighthaunt goes though as Shadespire seems really well suited to competitive play.
