BL!TZ! Magazine Issue 5

Post by Carnivean »

Sorry we're late sports fans!

It's been a busy midyear, and the ethernetworks haven't been treating us as well as we'd like. But we've been working hard to bring you a new, more professional look to the magazine, a smaller download size and content from across the globe. I think it's our best issue yet. So, without further ado, here's the link to issue 5 of BL!TZ Magazine:

http://blitz.ausbowl.com/blitz_issue_05.pdf

What will you find in BL!TZ issue 5:
• Two team showcases: Axtlinge's Three Chile Burrito Bandits and Mancaver's Terracotta Terrors;
• So You Want to be a T.O..., part one of Virral's how-to guide to commissioning a tournament;
• Vain shows you how to use your gaming for good, not evil, in Gaming for Charity;
• Tournament reviews from Cane Toad Cup, Sandgroper Cup and EucBowl;
• A review of the Feudball novel;
• An interview with the feisty gingers from BothDown;
• Part 2 of Hacker's Misery in an Ale Tankard;
• The 2012 BL!TZ Magazine Hall of Fame.
Plus the sub-mags, NAF Final Siren, news and the Last Word. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the winners of the BL!TZ Fifth Birthday Prize Draw and two special BL!TZ/AusBowl events coming soon that you could be involved in: The Road to Glory and the Ironbowl Challenge.

We hope you enjoy this issue, so don't forget to get BL!TZed!

I hope it's just you. I have downloaded it correctly from both a Mac using Safari and a PC using Explorer, and it is a smaller size than prior issues. Let me know if you continue to have issues and I can fire you a pdf copy.

Awesome read as per the norm. Really liked Carni's last word simply because of its honest approach to the thoughts and feelings towards the mags appeal outside of Australia.

In all honestly i wasn't feeling the new layout style simply because it was a bit too structured and neat for something related to BB. It definately did grow on me but perhaps its the orcish, dirty, messy side of me that yearned for the more chaotic look! Although having said that it did look spectacular don't get me wrong, just loved the original look. Probably Blitz 4 style was my favourite as it was a mix of clean and chaotic, just like me!

Thanks guys! I always find that I'm feeling a bit over it in the run up to the contribution deadline. But by reading the contributions and working on the mag I always reinvigorate my passion and, by the time it is released, I'm pumped and motivated again! Love it.

I understand you One Eye, and this issue was a bit about bedding down the new publishing program (I've gone from Publisher to InDesign). Hopefully I can insert a bit more "chaos" in later issues.

Oh, and guys, don't forget about the Road to Glory and Ironbowl Challenge!

I need at least one more participant for Road to Glory, and ideally Carni wants six more for the Ironbowl Challenge. See pages 58 and 59 for more details.

Thanks to the guys for getting it out and about. I've posted on WargamerAU, Westgamer and TFF. With Merry Mayhem, Zlurpee, twitter and facebook getting it we'll see amazing coverage I'm sure.

OK so it looks like the announcement is on the front page again properly.

Chrome users:
You may have difficulty downloading the file through the link, so there are a number of ways around it.

Option 1
Right click the link and download locally

Option 2
Type about:plugins into the website address bar at the top and press the ENTER key to display Chrome’s Plugins page
Disable all PDF viewer plugins to force Chrome to download the file.

Option 3
Open Google Chrome
Type about:plugins into the website address bar at the top and press the ENTER key to display Chrome’s Plugins page
Look down the list of Plugins for ‘Chrome PDF Viewer’
Click on ‘Disable’ just under Location of the Chrome PDF Viewer to disable it
Now look through the list of Plugins for your own PDF Viewer plugin e.g. Adobe Acrobat if you installed Adobe Reader
Click on ‘Enable’ just under Location of your own PDF viewer to enable it
Close Chrome and then reopen it – PDF files should now open properly in your own PDF viewer where you can navigate, view and work with the PDF properly

Option 4
Close Google Chrome
Open Adobe Reader
Click ‘Edit’ in the top menu bar then click ‘Preferences’ to open the Preferences window
Click ‘Internet’ in the left panel
Check (tick) the box at the top of Web Browser Options that says “Display PDF in Browser” (if it is already checked, uncheck it then select ‘OK’, then close Adobe Reader and go back to step 2)
Click ‘OK’ to save the settings and then close Adobe Reader
Open Google Chrome – Adobe Reader should now be used to open PDF in Chrome

I should point out that Option 3/4 did not work for me at all :(

This is an issue with the PDF view that comes in Chrome by default. There are plenty reports of this in the wild

I agree with Evan (dammit, that's twice in a couple of weeks now, what is going on? :eek: ), I prefer the old layout to the new one. That's not to say that I don't like this one, but more that I like the old one better.

The one thing I really noticed is that there were several 2-paged layouts in this edition. I'm not sure how well that works in an e-zine that most people will read with only one page on screen at any one time. It probably looks good if you print it out and read it like an actual magazine, but I wonder how many people would do that.

Overall I think you're doing a great job though, even if I didn't win any of the Bl!tz giveaway prize draws. :( ;)

Olaf, I recognised this as a potential problem, but single page spreads really limit the layout potential of the mag. In pretty much any pdf viewer you should have the option to view two page spreads, and that's how I recommend people do it to get the most out of their "BL!TZ experience"! :)

I guess it depends on how big your monitor/viewing screen is. My 17" screen at home isn't really big enough to view 2 pages at once. I imagine people reading Blitz on iPad screens (or something of a similar size) would also not be able to read 2 pages at a time. Not that it made the mag unreadable, it just made some of the pages look a bit odd when you only look at 1 page.

Awesome BL!TZ mag once more guys!!
onto the viewing issue, i read it through once and i was a bit 'what the hell?' its all different and the layout confused me, then i changed the way it is viewed (with the 2 page spread).. OMG it looks awesome! had another read through now - much better as a 2 page spread.
seriously good job guys :)

I had nothing to do with that. Promise.

Was pleasantly surprised myself.

Still, at second to last I get what's left over.
