Diplomacy
Hi all
With all the WW1 shenanigans going around at the moment, my fire has been kindled a little in regard to the game Diplomacy. I have wondered whether a forum-based game is possible and, considering I just found a great little java-based map that I can screenshot easily and use, I figure it should be workable.
Is there any interest?
For those not aware, Diplomacy is set in 1900 at the start and aims to replicate the delicate diplomatic situation in Europe at the time. Up to 7 players take on the role of a major European power (France, UK, Russia, Germany, Austo-Hungary, Turkey and Italy) and must use diplomacy and skill to attempt the domination of the continent. To be honest, you should probably have at least some knowledge of the basic rules to be involved, but enthusiastic n00bs shouldn't feel like they can't.
I figure it will work something like this:
I'll set up the map and post it in the forum thread. Players can liaise both in the forum thread and via pm during the Diplomacy Phase, and then submit their orders over the course of about a day (with strong and regular deadlines). I'll then update the map, post it, and the round begins again.
I'm not entirely sure whether I can legitimately set up a way of being a player myself, but I'm happy to oversee the whole shebang across the school holidays if enough people would like to try it.
Thoughts?

There's an app that you can play with now. Costs about $4: gives you 24hrs per turn. Pretty sure that you can play with a select group / or play people worldwide.

Re: Diplomacy
You're not playing with the right people Fortis. It's a great game. The key is to find a key alliance and leverage its benefits, but to betray your ally before they betray you. A delicate balance!
And its not dice based, so nothing is left to Nuffle's vagaries.

P.S. SinDex is a filthy, dirty, downright evil bastard at this game and will stab every single one of you in the back!
You have been warned!!
Disclaimer: I also will stab you in the back and laugh heartily as I do so but I wanted to out him first!

Re: Diplomacy
Its interesting you say that because a similar game caused my father issues many years ago and I have heard many others have had the same. Its a game entirely about needing to backstab but some have taken it to personal levels.Barks wrote:I'm still scarred by a game of this about 20y ago.

Re: Diplomacy
If anyone is interested PM me and I can send you details of an old school print PBM 'zine I still subscribe to.
Its about $2 an issue I think; includes Diplomacy and diplomacy variants, and a heap of other games as well (roborally!!!).
Its run/moderated by a guy in Canberra, 3-4 weekly turns - very social group with subscribers from around the world. Its been running for 184 issues - however long that is..... One of the few that survived the shift from PBM to PBeM to P-online.

I'm interested but have never played before, happy to be a reserve for this one and watch how it goes if you have 7 experienced players.

Re: Diplomacy
Add Olaf and Dazed gives us 7. I want to get it happening fairly quickly if it is going to happen, because I want things happening mainly during the holidays. With a 48 hour turnaround on turns (if this is ok) it should work well and we can get things running.OneEye wrote:Well if we need 7 we have...

My biggest concern is having me as a player as well as the one running it. I think, really, the only way to do it is to promise that I will not actually view any orders from other players until I have submitted my own. However, this will mean that pms sent to me need to be clearly labelled to differentiate questions/chat from game orders.
Are people happy with this?
Is there any other interest?
I have looked into some of the software, but TBH I reckon it'll be fairly easy just using the Java I have.
