The above are the traditional colours. There has been more talk about other positions and if you really wanted to, my suggestions would be :

Runners: Orange
Other: Purple (witch elves / troll slayers / ulfwerner)
Star Players: Blue

Gold : Umpires (because I can)

Other colours:
Brown
Pink (would rather not use it)

This leaves Assasins yet I would leave them as black bases

Berzerkers: Maybe Red

I had no idea there was such an identification option.
Thanks for posting.

Base rings were part of the 2ed rules and they remain a useful technique for identifying unusual (or similar) minis.

Base Ring Colours

I'd imagine it would be appropriate for anything that differs from the norm eg. shadowforge have some great minis but I struggle to identify the model/position.
Ring colour would be tremendously helpful.
Ditto for scratch builds or other cross-system models (not looking at your WM cryx concept BBD but it would be an example of an unfamiliar model).

Base Ring Colours

Absolutely. I've got base rings on my shadowforge elves to help differentiate the blitzers in particular.

On my Nuns team I've colour coded the numbering, so that blitzers have red numbers, catchers yellow etc. This is a more subtle effect than a base ring but helps with identification. I like the Roman Dwarves plumes being different colours as that has the same effect.

I like scratch building teams and have found it is a really great idea and helps out your opponent buy cutting down his "is that a lineman or a blitzer" questions.
But for some reason I always forget the catcher and runner colours.

From the old second ed box with the foam board, or the rubber band types from impact, or just paint the base.

Base rings are great. I use 2nd ed minis now a days and the new guys often can't tell the difference at a glance.

It's worse when it's non GW and worse again when it's a Converaion job. Base rings are a great way to keep track.

I use the following-
Throwers: Blue
Catchers/Runners: Yellow
Blitzers: Red
Linemen: White
Blockers: Purple
Specialists (inc Big Guys): Black

All my teams are painted with these colours on the base, and my question is this: Does it really matter if the colours are different to those given by 2nd ed (which I have no knowledge of btw) as long as they are consistent throughout the team/s? Is anyone out there really RC enough to care? ???

(played in low light one night and have since gotten rid of the browns and greens - too hard to differentiate from the reds)

that depends... Generally its not a big deal... but just because they are consistent with all your teams doesnt mean thats of assistance to anyone else.

Blitzers being red is a big one so atleast youve got that covered.

As long as the minis were reasonable representations I'd say there is zero problem. But say you have a team thats like... here's my dryad Woodelf team... and it then relies heavily on the base rings to determine what they are I'd say it is enough of any issue that your opponent isnt being a doush making a comment about it.

If youve read any of the blitz magazines... theres an issue with a team that won Best Painted at Euc Bowl called the F.A.N.S and the miniatures were just random awesome miniatures with very little guiding them towards certain positions. I got to play them and it was well worth it... that said it certainly helped that I knew red base rings were typically Blitzers, yellow were typically catchers etc. Because that was all I was going on when I played them. Now if youd started the game by saying the Blitzers are the Pink, the catchers are the Purple.. would I have dealt.. sure. Would a rookie coach... hmm maybe not? and based on some feedback in the past from some coaches... not being able to determine players on a team you play against can put a real sour spin on your tournament.

Found this handy guide on BGG
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/870896/chits-bb
Standardized Base Ring Colors

Linemen = BLACK or GREY
Catchers = YELLOW
Throwers = WHITE
Blitzers = RED
Blockers/Big Guys = GREEN
Secret Weapons = PURPLE
Special = ORANGE
Star Players = BLUE

Some teams players are obvious, but for those that aren't here you go:

Chaos: Beastmen = Linemen, Chaos Warriors = Blockers

Chaos Dwarf: Hobgoblins = Linemen, Chaos Dwarf = Blocker, Bull Centaur = Blitzer

Chaos Pact: Goblin = Catcher, Dark Elf = Special, Skaven = Special, Marauders = Linemen

Dark Elf: Runners = Throwers, Assassin = Secret Weapon, Witch Elf = Special

Dwarf: Runner = Thrower, Troll Slayer = Special, Death Roller = Secret Weapon

Goblin: Goblin or Pogoer = Catcher, Bombardier or Looney or Fanatic = Secret Weapon

Halfling: Halfling: Catcher

Khemri: Skeletons = Linemen, Thro-ra = Thrower, Blitz-ra = Blitzer, Tomb Guardian = Big Guy

Lizardmen: Skink = Catcher, Saurus = Blocker

Necromantic: Zombies = Linemen, Ghoul = Catcher, Wight = Blitzer, Flesh Golem = Blocker, Necromantic Werewolf = Special

Norse: Norse Werewolf = Special, Yhetee = Big Guy

Nurgle: Rotters = Linemen, Pestigor = Blitzer, Nurgle Warrior = Blocker, Beast of Nurgle = Big Guy

Ogre: Snotling = Catcher

Orc: Goblin = Catcher, Black Orc = Blocker

Skaven: Gutter Runner = Catcher

Undead: Skeleton or Zombie = Linemen, Ghoul = Catcher, Wight = Blitzer, Mummy = Big Guy

Underworld: Goblin = Catcher

Vampire: Thralls = Linemen, Vampire = Special

Wood Elf: Wardancer = Special

Note: ALL types of Ogres, Trolls, Kroxigors, Minotaurs, and Treemen are Big Guys.
I think it fits that Runners are effectively Throwers (P skill access), with no team (except Norse) having both positionals.
Norse "Runners" are effectively Catchers anyway (having A skill access).

Seems an odd bit of thread resurrection. Was there some recent debate that brought this about?

SABBL is starting back up with 2nd edition plastic teams for the newbies, differentiated by base colour.
Thought I'd add this to help with consistency.
